Mountain Lake Contamination

Since the year 2000 we’ve known that Mountain Lake at the Presidio of San Francisco has been contaminated with lead. The lead came from highway runoff during the period when leaded gas was being used. Testing indicates that lead is associated with the storm drains from Highway 1 leading directly into the lake. In addition, pesticides are evident in the sediments. Community members are pushing to have responsible agencies act to clean up the lake. The agencies include the Presidio Trust, Caltrans and the Army. Stay tuned for updates on this important cleanup activity.
