Background:
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area
is one of the worldÕs largest urban National Park systems encompassing 80,000
acres of California coastal landscape visited by 17 million people each year.
The Golden Gate National Parks also hold more threatened and endangered
species than any other national park (33!), and this project aims to spread
awareness of one of those species, the threatened Snowy Plover. Job Description:
Snowy Plover Outreach
Volunteers will conduct outreach with park visitors who enter Snowy Plover
habitat. Volunteers will greet park users, offering verbal and printed
information about the plovers, including how visitors can protect these
birds. Volunteers will also document actions that may impact snowy plovers
and other shorebirds. In
addition, volunteers may assist visitors with information about sites, events
& updates within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. In this way, volunteers will assist
in the National Park Service mission and stewardship goals. When necessary, Outreach Volunteers
alert park rangers to emergency or unusual situations. Duties: á
Rove
Snowy Plover habitat a minimum of three times per month. á
Provide
information and materials to park visitors. á
Develop
knowledge of park resources. á
Convey
NPS policies and regulations to the public. á
Report
significant wildlife disturbance to Park Rangers. á
Recognize
shorebirds of Ocean Beach. Knowledge/Skills Desired: á
Enjoy
interacting with a broad range of people. á
Friendly,
courteous, reliable, á
Able
to work constructively with those who disagree with park policies. á
Ability
to work independently. á
General
knowledge of wildlife and park natural & cultural resources. á
Comfortable
walking for 1-2 hours. á
